The 2023 Western States Open was hosted by BUSL95 March 10-12th. The weekend was a fantastic gathering of players from across the United States with a healthy balance of community and competition.
Overall, the weekend featured 19 players, 12 of which were from the host club, making this the largest Subbuteo tournament ever in the state of Idaho. BUSL95 would like to thank everybody for their participation, camaraderie, teaching, and learning over the weekend.
In the Open category, Patrick Sheridan (Colorado SC) defeated Michael Tillman (Maryland SC) in the final by a scoreline of 2-1. Sheridan raced out to a 2-0 lead, but Tillman clawed his way back into the match creating a tense finish.
In the semifinals, Sheridan beat Varant Kurkeyerian (Central Coast Condors) 1-0, while Tillman scored a golden goal versus the reigning national champion Dan Cranston (Maryland SC), to win 3-2.
The U16 category saw 6 participants, all from host club BUSL95, compete for the title. In the end, Eric Foster ran out a 4-0 winner versus Andrew Rice.
The Champagne Room Classic was played on Sunday. The event was a 2 man team tournament. Teams were formed via a random draw. Dan Cranston and Nick Trainer formed Good Question and defeated Ensalada Fiesta, featuring Eddy McLane and Lenny Foster, 1-0 in the final.
